How to Reset VLC Media Player. VLC is a free media player for multiple platforms, developed by the VideoLAN project. This wikiHow article will help you to reset VLC back to its default settings. This MKV file player offers a video filtration facility to operate on stream. It does not contain spyware, ads, or user tracking. VLC player can decode video (the process of managing the processing of video) faster. The software can be used in tablets, mobile phones, PC, and more. Supported platforms: Android, iOS, Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. In the menu bar, select 'Tools' and then 'Effects and Filters'. Select the 'Video Effects' tab and then 'Essential' subtab. Tick the 'Image adjust' checkbox and move the slider for the setting you want to change. Hue, Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, and Gamma may be adjusted.
If you use VLC for Android, the hit audio, video player and streamer for smartphones then you must have come across the three major gestures for the player. They are: (1) Change Brightness, (2) Seek and (3) Change Volume. These three are accessible when you open up a video. The tip also shows up automatically on the screen explaining where and how you’d have to drag your finger across the screen to achieve the said function. These big three gestures are mostly used when viewing videos using the VLC app for Android.

- Control Brightness: Tap, hold and drag up or down on the left side of the screen. Drag up and the brightness will go up and do the opposite and the screen will darken.
- Seek: Navigate the video. Tap, hold and drag left or right in the middle of the screen. Move your finger towards the left and the player will rewind the video and take you back. Move towards the right and the player will fast forward the video. You can go to the exact position that you want. This has to be one of the most used features in the app. Another bonus tip while seeking: Tap on the right side of the screen twice and it will go 10 seconds forward in the video. Tap on the left side of the screen twice and you rewind 10 seconds back into the video.
- Change Volume: Tap, hold and drag your finger on the far right side of the screen. Move your finger up and you will find the volume increasing and if you move your finger down, the sound will go down as well.

- Tap on the ☰ Menu.
- Click on Settings.
- Scroll down, and tap on Video under Extra settings.
- Scroll down and check off or on the Volume gesture, Brightness gesture, and Double tap to seek option under Controls.
There are a lot of strong arguments in favor of macOS, it is beautiful, robust, well designed, and just works. While it is true, I hate the fact that the default Media Player on macOS is a Quick Time Player. I wanted to use VLC as my default media player for all the video files on my mac. That said, let’s set VLC as the default app.
I use VLC simply because it is more intuitive than Quick Time Player, supports file types such as MKV, and gives you total control of the video playback from the keyboard.

1. Open With: The Easy Method
There is an option built into the macOS that lets you set any application as a default. To set VLC as default for a video file, Right-click the file> Click ‘Get Info’.

Under the ‘Open With‘ section, select VLC from the drop-down menu. Click the ‘Change All’ button. That’s all you need to do, the video file would open with VLC every time you double click it or press CMD+DOWN.
However, the problem with this method is that you would have to repeat the process of setting VLC as a default app for every video file type. If you want a set it and forget it type fix then let’s check out the next method.
2. Swift Default App: The effective Method
To set VLC as a default app for every video file type, we’d install a small utility app, Swift Default Apps. It’s a preference pane app that would let us set any app as default. Download the app from the Github page and install it on your system.
Once installed, you will find this app in System Preferences, Click SwiftDefaultApps icon.
Select Applications from the row of tabs, scroll down to find VLC and check all the media files that you want VLC to play. Now, simply close the System Preferences and that’s it. All of the video files have been set to VLC now.

Set VLC as Default App on Mac
These were two simple ways to set VLC as your default media player. I don’t mind using the first method but I consume a lot of video content and setting every format to play with VLC isn’t something I’d want to do.
